“What’s wrong?”

“I want to, but...”

He reversed for an instant, but soon grabbed her
body back. “...But what?”

Leticia wasn’t going to give up without a fight. It
was Eduardo’s erotic gaze that weakened her knees. Eduardo knew
instantly his consequence on the poor girl, she didn’t have a
chance and brought her body back into his, holding the back of her
head to keep her lips under his control.

Leticia couldn’t send him away even if she was
thinking clearly—and she definitely wasn’t thinking clearly! She
wanted to be with him; after all, he was going to be her husband
one-day, she felt so in her heart. She never favored another man
like she did Eduardo Sanchez. Never allowed her body to be touched
the way she allowed him to touch her.

Leticia gave in without further ado and made their
way towards the bedroom, throwing their bodies onto her bed.
Eduardo closed his eyes—a terrible thing to do! Straight away he
envisioned the only female on his mind, on top of Amber: sensually
kissing her neck, inside her ear, her breasts. Amber was so
beautiful to him, her body answering to his every question.

His kisses got deeper and deeper as he pulled down
her bra, feeling her gasp for air. Leticia ran her hands underneath
his shirt, pulled at his back, tried to draw down his pants,
inviting him inside. She didn’t quite know what she wanted, but she
wanted it now and the heat between her legs ached to feel all of
him, pressing her, dousing the fire ignited within.

Eduardo unbuckled his belt, unzipped his zipper and
obliged. He was untamed visualizing Amber beneath him quivering to
his contact. He didn’t want to stop the mental picture and pushed
his manhood into her, thrusting again and again. Her sheath was
constricted; tighter and dryer than expected and suffered her body
go limp, hearing her small cries and whimper. The sensation was
not
what he projected nor experienced in quite awhile. She
closed her legs in tenderness as he reopened his eyes.

Good God, she’s a virgin!

Leticia threw her head back in pain. She didn’t
expect it to hurt so much and the tears began to fall.

Eduardo looked down at her as she began to cry. He
stopped—felt his bulk unwilling to retreat. Oh hell he forgot his
condom too? He pulled out immediately and tried to control his
urge, tried to relax and clumsily laid down beside her on the
bed.

Not even moving in the slightest, Leticia laid
still. She wanted her first time to be wonderful, passionate, but
not like this and felt short-changed, the deed unfulfilled. She
closed her legs immediately and tried to forget the pain and
embarrassment.

“You OK?” Eduardo apologized, scooting away from her
body like she turned blue. “I didn’t know...honestly, I had
no
idea.”

Leticia reached over for the blanket and shyly
covered up her midriff and breasts. “I’m sorry too, I should have
told you, but you were...I mean, I should have told you.”

Eduardo sat up; spread the comforter over his torso
as well, “I feel like such a jerk.”

“Eddie...it’s OK, don’t worry, I’m all right. I’m
glad it was you,” Leticia expressed, leaning over to caress his
strong worried face.

“Are you sure?”

She blushed, her green eyes widening with emotion.
“I couldn’t help myself...I felt like I needed to be with you. You
have such a strong energy on women, but I bet you already knew
that, didn’t you?”

Now she made
him
blush. He turned away, laid
back down, ran his hand up and down his bare chest.

Leticia watched him attentively while he did this.
Eduardo was so incredibly sexy, his nakedness screamed come touch
me. Suddenly feeling the urge, Leticia rolled over and started
kissing his shoulder.

What was it about him that women just seemed to want
an auxiliary sexual encounter? That his dates wanted to make love
through the entire night and he just rather leave?

Eduardo was feeling a bit uneasy now; knowing full
well he just spoiled her virginity. Leticia was the type of woman
who held out for marriage and he wasn’t a marrying man. He was also
quite upset with himself for not thinking clearly. He should have
put the condom on prior to his sudden burst of rhapsody. It made
him ill how he could have been so senseless. It was Amber—Goddamn
her! Why did he have to fantasize about making love to her? He’s
never done that before, never needed to. He was always physically
attracted to the women he bedded and really had no desire to be
with this female, and to top it off; he’s just committed the
pinnacle of mistakes by not protecting himself!

He didn’t want to have sex with this woman again and
pulled away from Leticia’s wandering mouth. Rolling out of bed he
glanced over at her lying there then noticed the considerable
amount of blood on the blanket.

Eight

Competition

Or maybe,
Amber thought one night;
my
Father Figure was my mother..
.and why not? Sheila had to be
somewhat of a father to her as well. Amber never really had a true
father, or at least one step-father that stuck around long enough
that she could really get to know. The only parent that really
stuck around was Sheila—that forceful, strong-willed, stubborn
mother of hers. Opinionated yes, caring yes, a little bit of both
really, and in this strange time of playful exchange with her
brother-in-law did she realize why she was so attracted to him in
the first place. He introduced her to that presence of unyielding
strength, the force that her mother encompassed. It was what drew
her to him.

Eduardo was a man who knew what he wanted, and knew
how to get it. He encompassed primeval testosterone with a can-do
attitude. He was intelligent, unrehearsed, and dressed like no
other with passionate eyes that could look deep into your soul. And
confidence! She’d never seen someone with so much self-assurance;
it practically oozed out of his body. A strut and saunter that was
a habit. Saunter, yes, definitely saunter. What was it about men
who sauntered? Did they practice it? Was it acquired when you were
attractive, to enter a room in such a way as to control it? All
eyes on him and nothing else, and when the physical attraction was
not achieved, the walk would definitely clinch the arena? Why do
females instantly look in the direction of the male who saunters?
Was it instant magnetism or awe of assurance and conceit? Whatever
it was, Eduardo possessed it. Men like Eduardo were never
interested in Amber. They might look at her body yes, but never
wanted to date her. Men like Eduardo wanted a celebrity, a super
model or at least a centerfold. Amber was none of those; she was a
tomboy through and through, played softball, skinned her knees and
challenged the boys at burping.

Everything was comfy, cozy for Amber until Leticia
walked through that Sanchez front door. Amber and Victor had just
finished telling The Family that she was pregnant for the second
time, and everyone was sharing their best wishes when Leticia
appeared. There she was. There
they
were; both of them with
their arms around each other’s waist, obviously in love, stealing
every bit of Amber’s joy.

Amber was feeling more than content lately that she
had the love and comfort of Victor and now after years of effort,
Eduardo’s attention. It was his attention, his utmost consideration
that she constantly tried to achieve. It was fun; it was exciting
in the ways that she won. Her innocent flirtation evolved into
intrigue. It felt special to know that a man like Eduardo was
interested in a tomboy like herself even if they were just friends.
At first, she really didn’t want all his concentration, but after
playing with his curiosity, it became almost necessary to her. Call
it a game; call it entertainment or sport, but Amber was feeling
worthy now; she was a woman who had the power to entice. The
capability of snapping her fingers and then suddenly, Eduardo would
appear. She would walk across the room, go into the kitchen, he
would follow. She would walk outside; sit down near the pool, he
would materialize. At the dinner table, choosing a chair, Eduardo
would sit next to her. They’d laugh, tell each other a joke, poke
fun at one another, talk about their same interests; it was all
very safe, protected still by the
Sister-in-law
slash
Brother-in-law
Act. That accepted action between a man and a
woman who were wed into the same family.

And then
she
came into the house, with her
long lean figure, ebony hair, made-up face and incredible green
eyes. The moment Eduardo stepped into the house with Leticia; Amber
knew all her merriment would have to vanish. Amber was no longer in
control of Eduardo and his wonderment. He was going to be totally
consumed by the exquisite Leticia, his new claim, his fresh prize,
and she should have been a bitch, she should have been stuck up,
wretched, but she wasn’t!

And oh how the Sanchez’s cheered at her existence,
raising their hands up in the air as if they were praising the Lord
at church on Sunday’s. Never have they seen a maiden as “cuando
bastante as Leticia” and oh how her eyes “were greener than
Eduardo’s” or the “leaves on the flowers around the house” they
continually repeated as if singing an acclamation. The Family
flocked to her like she was some sort of movie star entering their
humble habitat. She was exalted instantly, the zenith of Latin
perfection. She came from a Catholic background, unlike Amber who
never attended church, Leticia and her family went twice a week.
She was a virgin—Amber could only assume darn her— loved children,
could cook and had a career, car, apartment, many things Amber
never achieved at her age.

Amber was jealous immediately. The way Eduardo
smiled effortlessly when they exchanged special glances, veiled
looks and confidence in one another.
But it doesn’t matter
,
she kept telling herself,
I have Victor
.

“Amber, this is Leticia.”

Just the way he said her name with that ethnic
accent, sent Amber raving into another dimension. You see she
thought it was pronounced “Luh-tish-sha”, but when Eduardo said her
name, it was “Le-tee-see-uh.”
Whatever
, Amber thought.

“Glad to meet you Leticia,” Amber just said,
extending out her hand. Leticia grabbed her hand and gave her a
kiss on her cheek, holding Amber’s hand within hers for a
moment.

“Oh, I’m so glad to meet you finally, Eddie’s told
me so much about you and Victor and the family, I feel like I know
you already, I hope we become great friends,” Leticia let out
honestly, sweetly.

Amber was shocked at how nice she was. Darn it!
Eddie?
When did he shorten his name? They had given each
other pet names? This is sick, nauseating and why am I so goddamn
jealous? Darn it! Damn him! Why wasn’t I ever allowed to call him
that?

“Eduardo, congratulate us, we’re having another
baby!” Victor announced, coming up behind his wife and wrapping his
arms around her waist.

Eduardo’s expression goes clean. Amber was getting
further and farther away from his reach. Was she ever even
available? Good God, another baby? He closed his eyes slightly,
grabbed Leticia’s hand and squeezed it tight. Hopefully the
temptation of kissing his sister-in-law would fade now that she was
going to have another child with his brother. Just proved to
Eduardo extensively how devoted she was to him. The thought of the
dedication made him smile. “Congratulations,” Eduardo happily gave
to the couple.

Amber watched Eduardo escort his ladylove to the
backyard. She observed them through the sheer curtains, nuzzle up
to each other and kiss delicately. Then Eduardo closed his eyes and
looked sadly down at the ground.

“He said he wants to marry her,” Rosalba whispered
into Amber’s ear as she approached behind her. Both women gaze at
Eduardo as he hovered over Leticia like she was some porcelain
china doll. “You like her, no?”

Amber turned to look at her mother-in-law, “Yes, I
do actually, she seems nice.”

“Her family has been going to St. Ferdinand for two
generations. Eduardo was very lucky to find such a rare flower,”
Rosalba said, patting her daughter-in-law on her back. “Sí, yes,
this is a great day daughter, come with me to start the dinner,
no?”

Amber broke away from the happy couple and looked
straight into Rosalba’s eyes.
Yes, she was her daughter,
she
thought.
One of The Family, this special, wonderful, loving
family.
Rosalba was such a gracious person, so gentle and so
loving to all her family members and that most definitely included
her. Amber was already accepted into The Family years ago. The
Family was just excited, elated that’s all and Leticia was still
just a guest until Eduardo made it final.

When Victor and Amber got home later that night,
Victor couldn’t stop talking about her holiness. How his mother and
father just opened up their arms and treated her like she was
already a member of The Family.

“Did you see how Mama kept holding her hand like
Leticia was going to fly away or something?”

Amber was in the other room surveying the empty crib
and whispered back to him, “Yes, and did you notice how your father
kept stuttering?”

Victor escorted a sleepy Adrian to his own room.
“Untie your shoes mehiò before you take them off.”

A sluggish Adrian slowly began untying his shoes and
Victor pulled out his son’s pajamas and began undressing him. “What
did you think about her eyes?” Victor inquired as Amber walked into
Adrian’s room.

“I don’t see what the big deal is, so they’re green,
whatever,” Amber gave out, trying to play them down.

Victor slipped the pajama top over his son’s head.
“Yah—I know, but they’re so green, Eduardo’s are green, but
hers
—I’ve never seen eyes like that before.”
