“Hell no, unlock the goddamn door!”

The clicking sound of the lock registers in my brain and the three of us move to the accident.

“Call 911!” I shout back to Jo as I run toward the car.

Everything in front of me is a blur. Steve’s car is flipped on its side and a truck is crashed into a tree to the far right. Moving to see where everyone is, I can’t see, it’s too dark.

“Linc, help them, please.”

“Etty, get back. Jo’s on the phone with 911 and they’ll be here soon. You have to back off, you don’t know what we’re going to find.”

He pulls me into his side, his body shaking.

I can feel myself going into shock.
This can’t be happening.

After what feels like an eternity, the sirens begin to sound from down the road. Linc holds on tightly to both Jo and me as they rush out of the ambulance and to the scene.

“I want to go talk to them, stay here,” he says before running over to the police officers.

Jo latches onto me and we stand together, tears falling from our eyes.

“They’ll be okay,” she says, curling her arm around me.

“I can’t lose him, Jo, we finally found each other,” I mutter in between sobs.

“I know, sweetie.”

Linc runs back over to us, breathing heavily.

“Get in the car, we’re going to head on over to the hospital now. We don’t want to be here right now, there’s nothing we can do.”

“Linc, we can’t leave, I have to know he’s okay.”

“Etty, get in the fucking car now!”

“Lincoln, don’t do that to her. She’s just as upset about this as you are. Be fair.”

He turns to walk away from us. I know this is hard on everyone here, but we have to get through this together. We don’t know what going on, let alone what to expect.

“Come on, baby girl, we’re in this together. Don’t let him upset you, he’s feeling just as lost as you are. We’ll meet the ambulance at the hospital and you’ll be able to see him again.”

Sobs break through and the tears fall from my eyes as I follow Jo to the car. I
need
to see him; I have to know he’s okay.

I’m growing more impatient by the minute. It’s been two hours since we got here and all we know is that Dault was sent in for immediate surgery.

Linc was able to go upstairs and see Steve. Thankfully, everyone else is alright, well, not really, but not nearly as severe as my main concern…Dault.

“I can’t just sit here. I have to know what’s going on,” I say while starting to pace the short distance in front of the chairs.

“Etty, why don’t we go downstairs and get some air,” Jo says, moving to stand.

“No, it’s okay, you stay here. You should be trying to rest anyway; you just left this fucking place. I hate hospitals, they are hell on earth.”

“I’ll be back in a few minutes; I need to walk off this feeling of uncertainty. Please call me if anyone comes out to talk to you.”

“I will, sweetie,” Jo replies with a smile.

Leaving the waiting area, I find the elevator and move toward the lobby. I need some air, something to help me clear my mind. Making my way outside, the cool night air hits my face and the tears falling along my cheeks begin to sting my face.

So many things are rushing through my thoughts. Our lives were
finally
starting to fall into place—the walls to my soul were beginning to crumble, and my heart was starting to let him in.  I need to know that he’s okay, yet there’s nothing I can do to help him.

Resting myself up against the concrete wall, I close my eyes and chant a silent prayer that Dault will pull through his surgery and come back to me.

“Etty,” a familiar voice sounds from the doors.

My eyes pop open to see Christian running toward me.

“Christian, what are you going here?” I ask, standing away from the wall.

“I had to find you. My shift just ended and I heard what happened, I tried to see what was going on and wanted to tell you myself.”

With a look of shock on my face I ask, “Tell me what, Christian? How did you even know I was here or what happened?”

Shaking his head, he raises his hand for me to stop, taking in a deep breath through is nose and exhaling by his mouth.

“Never mind all of that now, you need to know, Etty.”

“Know
what
?”

Pulling me into his arms, he runs his hands up and down my back.

I try to fight against his embrace but he’s too strong. He’s holding on to me so tight.

“Christian, let me go!” I shout.

“Etty, you have to listen to me, please let me in,” he begs.

“What the fuck are you talking about? Let me go.”

“Will you please stop fighting me and let me talk to you? Believe me, you’ll want to hear this coming from me.”

I resist the struggle for a moment to hear what he has to say. He loosens his grasp on me and I finally feel like I can take in a deep breath.

“What are you talking about?” I ask, pulling away from him.

My eyes are set on his, I’m so confused.

“He’s gone, Etty, I’m so sorry but he’s gone.”

I take a step back, my hand flying over my mouth as I let out a gasp of air.

“Etty, come here; let me be here for you.”

“No, no this can’t be happening,” I cry.

His arms reach out for me as I fall to the ground. My heart stops, my world turns black…all I can see is his face.

Chapter 1

Tonight was just an average night, nothing to celebrate, yet that’s all I seem to do anymore. Celebrate with the bottle, just me, myself and I.

Having just gotten home from work, I reach for the bottle and walk outside to the back porch.

The sun has just set; the sky quickly turning dark as I light my cigarette. The bright flash of the flame shines brightly and pulls me into a trance.

Lost in thought, I start to feel the heat and quickly pull my arm back, I almost singed my eyebrows.

As I fall into the chair I take a long drag of my smoke and a swallow of the amber liquid. It’s my release, the only way to help myself feel numb and forget about everything I've done wrong in my life. I’m the bastard son, the worthless husband and the deadbeat that can do no right.

My life is falling apart.

Looking down I stare at the bottle. I know I should stop, pour it down the drain and toss it away for good…I just can’t.

The phone begins to ring in the house, yet I don’t have the will to get up and get it. Instead I slouch down in the chair and take in another gulp.

Having starred out into the darkness for who knows how long, the bottle is just about half way empty and I’m beginning to realize that I am in fact numb. My legs feel as though they've been torn from my body, my arms and hands just weightless objects.

A crashing sound pulls me from my trance. Looking down toward my feet I see my only escape in a puddle surrounded by pieces of broken glass.

The house phone begins to ring again; I guess I should see who it is. After all it’s been ringing nonstop all night, it could be important.

Getting up from the chair I stumble into the brick wall. Trying to regain my bearings, I push myself from the wall and walk through the sliding glass doors.

The ringing of the phone irritates me as I step closer.
