No one had any firearms, so that was the good part. We tore into them something fierce as they were only 4 and we were many. Nick eliminated two of them within seconds and the rest dove for cover. I could see another man join up with Winter and the illusionist and they began slathering themselves in some kind of grease. I could hear a commotion coming from behind me that signaled their back up had arrived. Nick turned his focus to fight the newcomers with Irina and Khatara when the man with the grease came out of hiding and charged. The Vampires did not run to meet him as they were too busy guarding me and Josef, trying to get us out of there. Aira and Ivy stepped to meet the man’s charge.

Ivy went to take the man on and landed some terrific hits but the guy despite taking a massive beating stayed on his feet and eventually knocked Ivy down and caught Aira with her hit and run attacks. Storai went over and bit a good chunk out of his neck and the man went down when Winter jumped in. She hit Storai with her taser and then kicked her so hard she went through the glass display case. I could now hear gun fire and police sirens so this fight just got more interesting.

I was roughly taken away By Vikonika as the table we were behind exploded. The guy Storai bit was now on his feet and running towards us. I saw Nick’s blast hit him but he barely budged. He started going toe to toe with Vikonika just as a round slammed into my arm. I got up and started screaming and ended up getting outside where the cops quickly tackled me down. Before I knew it I was in the ambulance heading towards the hospital.

CHAPTER
30

Some say Freedom is Free…..

By the time I was drugged enough to focus on something other the pain, I found myself in a room with one other person. The doctor walked over to me and looked down at me strangely.

“Excuse me young man, but are you from California?” The doctor asked me.

“Yeah, why?” I wondered. I knew I saw her face before but I couldn’t quite place it.

“You were in the hospital for doing something illegal I can’t remember a couple months ago?”

“Yeah that was me, you were my doctor!” As soon as I said it I figured I had better keep my mouth shut. I didn’t know if she knew I was supposed to be dead or not.

“You got shot huh? Still starting trouble Cory?”

“No Ma’am, I was just in the crossfire this time.”

“That’s good to hear. I am so sorry about your parents. I was the attending physician that night. It is what made me pack up and move back home.” The doctor said looking forlorn.

“What are you talking about? What happened to my parents?” I said now worried.

“Maybe I have you confused with someone else.”

“I haven’t heard from my parents in months, what happened?”

“How could they not tell you, it was all over the
news!”

“Tell me what? Please get to the point instead of dancing around it.”

“Your parents were murdered, right on the steps of a courthouse, gunned down by an unknown assassin. The police didn’t even respond for five minutes, even though the courthouse was packed with cops and their headquarters were three buildings down. The lack of justice or cops who care is the reason I left.”

“Are you sure it was my parents?” I asked now about to cry.

“I would never forget your fathers face, I was thinking he was attractive as he scolded you that day. Last name Price right?”

I just nodded and started to cry. I could hear a commotion going on in the bed next to me. I heard a loud thump like someone fell to the ground. I saw the patient next to me get
up, it was the guy who got a good chunk of his neck bit off only now it was almost healed. I thought he died.

“Run doctor, run and
call the police. Let them know Immortal is here.”

I pushed the doctor away and told her to run as
Immortal closed the distance between us.

“Ah you are one of those sheep from the mall. I will never join you. Sonar has opened my eyes. After I am finished there won’t be enough of you left for the cops to find.”

He then picked up and Ivy pole and started beating the hell out of me with it. He was built solidly and despite my attempts to block it he was landing often. I went to grab the Ivy pole as hospital security ran in the door. The security personnel surrounded him and wrestled him down to my bed. He kicked one of them in the face and scooted up my bed some more putting pain on my injured shoulder. He kicked another security guard in the face and snapped his head back, catching me perfectly in the nose. I saw stars as Security now each had a limb. I wasn’t thinking clearly and sent out the strongest jolt I could. I could hear bodies hitting the floor and the person on top of me went limp. I bit down hard on his shoulder and waited for his blood to pool in my mouth. The sensation was unlike the other times.

I still felt euphoric while drinking from him, but now I also felt something else. My pain was easing up and it was like I could feel myself getting better. I allowed myself a minute more of this before I got up stumbling out of th
e room. Although they cut my top off and took my shoes, I still had on my pants. I took off running and I could hear the doctor call after me. I made it to the door and hopped on a bus. By dumb luck I mad money in the pocket, Irina must have thought of everything. I could see the cop cars going flying by as I thought about my folks.

The principal knew all along they were dead and didn’t tell me. Worse I am sure
Summer knew too. One thing for sure is that they didn’t have anything over me anymore. I rode the bus until the end of the line which turned out to be a bus depot. From there I bought a gaudy “Albuquerque” tourist shirt and some flip flops from a drug store. I boarded a grey hound bound for El Paso.

On the bus I was wondering where I could go. The school were supposedly the good guys but all I felt by being there were that maybe they were not so good after all. I thought about Sonar and maybe I could join his group. I quickly dismissed the idea. I wept silently to myself as the bus pulled into its first rest stop, some place called Hatch. I couldn’t put my finger on it but something told me to get off.

Hatch was a little nothing town which apparently was the chili capital of the world. I found an old farm house to hide out in while I gathered my thoughts. I could feel my body healing itself when it felt like something in my skin was trying to come out. On my forearm I could see some type of capsule shaped object just under my skin. It began to hurt as my body was trying to expel it. Finally I could take no more and just bit my skin open. Out popped a metal capsule looking thing. I knew what is was immediately.

I ran out of the farmhouse trying to find somewhere to put the beacon I found but it was too late. Vanessa was there along with team two waiting on me.

“Cory, why did you run?” Asked Vanessa. “I never would have figured you would be our first mission. Just come on back to the school.”

“I am not going easy Vanessa. I have nothing left to live for. If I die here tonight, I don’t care.”

“Cory it doesn’t have to be this way” Storai spoke. “I know you have been mistreated, if you come back you could live with my kind instead. Just come quietly.”

“Cory is not yours mongrel,” Annova spoke as she and her fellow vampire surrounded Storai. “Your true colors are showing
mongrel, trying to take our savior.”

While they were distracted I bolted. Vanessa caught me before long and hit me with some sort of stick, giving Ivy the chance to catch up.

“Cory please just stop” I could hear Ivy plead. “You can’t beat both of us.”

I charged at Vanessa as she blinked out and in again and whacked me with her stick. The weapon she had made it hard for me to grab her as she now had reach. Ivy joined in the fight and I was getting tore up pretty good. I couldn’t run away because I would be caught. I couldn’t stand and fight because it was two of them and they worked
good together. I waited for someone to hit me solidly and I went out down feigning unconsciousness. I was poked with a stick a good bit of times just to make sure I was down. I filled my mind with thoughts of pain alternating between my parents and picturing them dying.

“He is having a hell of a nightmare I think”, I could hear Ivy say.

“Go make sure they are not going to kill each other over there.” I heard Vanessa speak before continuing, “I have no idea why the professor thought a mixed team could work.” I stayed down as I heard footsteps getting closer to me. I was lifted up roughly at first by big rough hands I figured belonged to the werewolf before being handled by much nicer hands which I figured was one of the vampires. I heard what I figured was a helicopter land as I was way too focused on switching topics in my brain as fast as I could, never stopping on one subject long enough for Ivy to guess what I was up too. As we ascended in the Helicopter I thought back to the night the vampires attacked me and I could hear Ivy gasp. I some fell asleep during the helicopter ride and came to while being transported while shackled and chained to a waiting airplane. I really didn’t have a plan but I knew they were not working as a team totally.

“Since you guys had to come catch me, does that mean I am a bad guy now, ready to be handed over to the werewolves?”

“You are not going anywhere Cory, although I imagine her Majesty will be quite angry at you.” Annova spoke.

“That is not the way things work.” I could hear Storai’s booming voice. “All male wizards taken prisoner are ours for at least the first two weeks.”

They continued arguing until the plane landed in San Francisco. Ivy tried to tell them I was just trying to get into their head but they just wouldn’t listen. She eventually became so angry she sat at the front of the plane and put on her head phones. As the plane landed, Vanessa sat me up and roughly pushed me to the door.

“Cory you were just the first.” She said full of herself. “I should have been Alpha, but I will be the best Bravo team leader ever. I even picked out my code name “Vanish.”

She roughly pushed me towards the stairs and I almost fell a few times. She pushed me into a waiting car with her and both the Vampires in one, and Ivy and Storai in the other.

“Vanish huh, what I dumb name.” I said trying to get her goat. “Your power is teleportation, you should call yourself ….” I mumbled the last part on purpose and whispered it also.

“I should call myself what?”

“You should call yourself…” I said it again only now I spoke softer as the car was speeding down the freeway.

“I should call myself what? Say it louder.” Said Vanessa as she put her ear to my mouth.

I bit down on her ear hard. I could hear cartilage crunch under my teeth and her blood filled my mouth. Storai tried to get me off of her
but she couldn’t pull me off with Vanessa’s ear coming with it. I made sure to apply just enough pressure that her ear wouldn’t come off but I could still drink. The car pulled over to the side of the road as that feeling of ecstasy washed over me. They eventually got me off of her by threatening my genitals. I let go immediately because let’s face it, once you have been hit in the jewels once you really don’t need to relieve the experience. As they were putting me in the car I turned to Vanessa.

“I know exactly what they should call you in honor of your first mission,” I said grinning.

She slapped me hard across the face and had to be restrained by Ivy.

“You have
any more nicknames for me?” She said still mad about the ear.

“Like a said Vanessa, only one name comes to mind when discussing your first mission.”

“And what name would that be?”

“You should call yourself ‘Failure’”, I said laughing even harder now.

“But I haven’t failed.” She said as she threw me in the car.

As soon as the door shut and the car slowly began to move I teleported myself out of the car on the side of the road and waved goodbye to her. I could still remember her face as she first saw me, then attempted to use her powers but found out they didn’t work. The cars instantly stopped for me, but by then I was on the other side of the freeway, with them chasing the illusion I cast of myself teleporting down the highway.

CHAPTER 31

Where We First Started

The next couple of months I spent hiding in plain sight. I found a house owned by an old lady who always seemed to be out doing something. I crashed in her house during the day under a bed and at night when she came home I disguised myself as furniture. Thanks to her internet, I found out my parents were in fact murdered. It was hard for me to grieve properly because I had finally stopped kidding myself, I wanted to live. While surfing the net, I eventually got bored and decided to see the world, starting with Yosemite.
