From inside Catherine heard the chaos. Mary dared not move knowing there was nothing physically in her power she could do apart from pray that Mathias would make a return. Catherine listened to the thuds and screams of her fellow vampires.

They both looked at each and knew that Samuel was here.

“What shall I do grandma, what shall I do?” begged Catherine.

“Don’t worry dear, all will be ok. Just stay behind me. Mathias will be back shortly.

I promise you Catherine, Samuel will not take you. Believe in me,” said Mary.

Catherine had every faith in her grandmother’s words and despite the violence going on outside had no reason to doubt her.

Back outside the last remaining vampires put on guard fought valiantly to try and fight off Samuel and Joseph but the strength and determination of the two of them was proving hard to overcome and they found themselves constantly being over powered.

The last remaining guard was grabbed by both Joseph and Samuel at the same time and with one strong tug each they have ripped his body right in half and left the pieces lying parallel to each other.

Casually Samuel walked up the steps to Catherine’s trailer and opened the door as if it was his home.

“Hello dear, it’s me Daddy,” smirked Samuel and held out his arms to Catherine as if he was expecting an embrace of some sort.

Catherine looked at him with complete disgust whilst being overcome with terror at the same time.

Mary jumped up and dived in front of Catherine protecting her with her own body.

“Oh sit down you silly old fool. How on Earth could you help her? I could just toss you away like the piece of rubbish that you are,” snarled Samuel to Mary.

Walking closer he pulled out a chair and rested one of his feet upon it whilst staring at his newfound daughter. Arrogance oozed from Samuel which Mary interpreted to herself as complete and utter stupidity.

“No need to be afraid Catherine,” said Samuel “I am your father. I am here to take you home, with me. I have a wonderful new life set out before us. I will make you live the life you wish you could. No more hiding and no more being dictated to by these .. these people” spat Samuel throwing a look at Mary.

Joseph hovered by the door of the trailing urging Samuel to hurry. He was afraid

Tobias would catch them up and that Mathias and the rest of the community would come to check upon Catherine sooner rather than later.

“I don’t want to take you Catherine,” continued Samuel, “ I want you to come voluntarily. I have so much to offer you and your child. A new life, a new beginning for our kind. You can have a position of great power. It will be ours. We can take over and do as we please. We should be at the top of the food chain, not hiding from these peasants. Let’s do it together daughter, me and you. Our own special family. Survival of the fittest Catherine, that is me and you. Come on, join me and let’s take the world by storm.”

“No,” said Catherine firmly and ensured that she kept her head held as high as she possibly could in his presence.

“Well, Catherine, I don’t want to have to take you but I will if you make me. It would just make the process all the more harder and I will have to train you until you succumb to my way of thinking. The correct way of thinking. It would be so much easier all round if you just agreed to come with me dear girl!” Samuel’s tone had completely changed in his direction towards Catherine. A tone of violence, aggression and intimidation now fell her way.

Continuing to hold her head high, Catherine looked right at Samuel and simply said again , “No.”

“Well, that is a shame Catherine. Well you will be coming with us if you like it or not. Stand aside, Mary for I wish to take my daughter.”

Mary drew her body closer to Catherine’s and pushed her as far back as she could.

“Over my dead body,” shouted Mary “You will not walk out of here with my granddaughter.”

Samuel laughed a big hearty laugh but was completely frustrated at the same time as this was taking up too much precious time which he could not afford to lose. He knew Tobias would be back at any minute and if possible he wished to avoid bumping into Mathias, considering their past history.

“I have been more than patient, Catherine. You come here now or I will do as you grandmother predicts and take you over her dead body,” said Samuel.

Mary continued to stand tight against Catherine, her arms reaching behind her to hold her. She tilted her head to the left so she could just about make eye contact with

Catherine and whispered to her that under no circumstance was she to go without a fight, regardless of the consequences.

As Mary turned her head back from Catherine,  Samuel jumped on top of her body.

Catherine jumped on Samuel’s back and tried to pull him off her grandmother, but she was soon restrained by Joseph, who had been pretty quiet up until now upon entering the trailer. Joseph was taken by surprise at Catherine’s strength and struggled to keep hold of her.

Mary felt Samuel’s sharp teeth in her neck and then felt the flow of blood leave her body and enter into Samuel’s. As he sucked her life from her, Mary suddenly began to smile.

Both Catherine and Joseph saw it and were very alarmed at the unusual reaction. Samuel continued to suck and suck until not a drop of blood was left in her body and then dropped her corpse to the floor with a huge feeling of satisfaction.

Catherine dropped to her knees and let out a blood curdling scream which attracted the attention Samuel did not want.

The door to the trailer flew open and there stood Mathias and Tobias side by side ready to rip Samuel to shreds. Joseph backed away knowing his time was up.

Samuel, however, stood up confident he could still get past these too if he really tried, whilst taking Catherine with him. He had Joseph on his side so it was one on one and he had just fed, giving him the added advantage he thought to himself.

Mathias looked at the body of Mary on the floor and tears filled his eyes. His lost love, now gone forever. He looked up at Catherine and then back to Mary. Mathias could not believe that two people so special to his life had been taken by this man, but knew now that his time was finally up.

Casually ignoring Samuel, Mathias strolled towards Mary and picked up her lifeless body and gently kissed her forehead. The smile was still on her lips and Mathias lowered his head to kiss them. He carried her past Catherine and Joseph, who did not make any attempt to block his way and there he simply laid her on the bed with her arms folded across her chest.

“My angel,” said Mathias and kissed her once more.

Confused, Samuel decided to take full advantage of the moment and pushed Tobias flying out of the door of the trailer and then ran to Catherine, gripping her sharply around the wrist.

“Come on,” Samuel barked at Joseph and attempted to make for the door whilst still having hold of Catherine.

“You dam fool, Samuel. Not only are you a dam fool but you have just damned yourself,” said Mathias, so lowly that Samuel only just caught the words.

As soon as he did, cramps over took Samuel’s body. He tried to fight back the pain, but it increased at such a rate he could do nothing to fight it.

He let go of Catherine, who dived back behind the safety of her grandfather.

Samuel screamed in agony as his whole body suddenly began to feel as if it was on fire. From the pit of his stomach to the stem of his brain, it felt like it was melting.

“What’s happening, what is happening?” he hollered as he rolled around the floor in agonising discomfort.

“Did you never learn not to drink the blood of a, vampire you foolish man?” snapped

Mathias. “Too keen to take the lead, but never patient enough to learn, Samuel, that has always been your problem. Take, take, take. You have only ever thought about yourself and what you wanted and never anybody else. My poor girl you took away as you could not be bothered to wait a few more months. If you did, she would still be here now. Who in their right mind impregnates a vampire girl before she has come of age, you selfish creature? You knew she would die. If you loved her so much you would have waited a few more months, but you were so inpatient to have your way you disregarded her and her entire existence. Look now at what you have just done.

Acting on impulse again and now it has dammed you.”

“Dammed, dammed, dammed? Impossible!” screamed Samuel.   “No Samuel, you fool. Not impossible. Mary was of our lineage, you idiot. Her lineage was so weak that she did not change, but she was strong enough to carry a vampire child. She didn’t need to feed like we do but she had special powers of her own. She knew things, could see things. Yet she was not granted with our eternal gift of life.

Either way, along the lines, her ancestors were vampire and a drop of their blood still existed in her body. Now you have drunk it and we all know what happens to a vampire that drinks the blood of another vampire. “DAMMED !!!!!!!”  shouted

Mathias with a combination of satisfaction, but pain.

Samuel stared in disbelief, his shock momentarily blocking out the pain. His mind was racing as to how this could be. How could he not of known? But now he did and the realisation of what he had done began to sink in.

His body began to turn to ash and flake off before his very eyes into a pile on the floor before him.

“Noooooooooooooooooooooooo!” he screamed before shooting a final glance at the direction of his daughter.

Suddenly his whole body disintegrated and was nothing more than a pile of ash.

Everyone was in complete silence unable to take it what had just happened.

Catherine was on the floor in complete shock and consumed with heart wrenching pain as she looked at the body of her dear, poor, old grandmother whose only motive during her life was to keep her safe and she had sacrificed her own existence in order to protect hers.

Mathias cradled Mary’s body close to his chest and buried his face into her hair. He then put her down again and stroked her face. He had never wanted to let go of Mary but knew the time would come one day, just not like this.

It was only when Tobias managed to crawl back to the trailer almost completely devoid of energy did Mathias and Catherine turn and remembered Joseph was still in their presence.

“Mathias, my old friend, I did not want to lead him here, he made me. He threatened me, he blackmailed me, he … “ stammered Joseph.   Mathias seemed not to hear Joseph at first as he was too consumed with Mary. He was cherishing his last few moments with her the best he could. He regretted now not spending more time with her during the life she had, but now that was over and all he had were these few moments. Regardless of her aged appearance to Mathias, Mary was the source of all beauty. Saying his goodbyes, he laid her down yet again and composed himself.  He then turned his attention to Joseph.

“My old friend, who I have welcomed back time after time. I have trusted you, recommended you, had faith in you, yet you bring death to my family.” Said Mathias shaking his head in disbelief.

He then grabbed Joseph and dragged his body out of the trailer and tossed it onto the ground outside. By this point a crowd of Mathias’ community had congregated around Joseph, forming a circle of anger which engulfed him and they stood back to watch and see what Mathias would do next. Joseph begged for forgiveness knowing that there was no escape, but everyone could see that mercy was the last thing on Mathias’ mind. Mathias had the death of Jane and now the death of Mary on his mind and everyone could see he was going to get his vengeance.   Mathias tied a length of rope to each of Joseph’s limbs and tossed the four pieces to carefully selected vampires which were looking on. Then Mathias grabbed tight hold of Joseph’s head and looking deep into his eyes, said,

“No one brings danger to my door and no one harms my family.”

It was at this point that Mathias proceeded to pull off Joseph’s head and the four vampires pulled the rope, tugging his limbs from his body. The pieces were then piled high on top of one another to which Mathias doused them in flames and watched them burn.

The air filled with a smell of treachery and whilst Mathias had got his revenge and also seen the end of Samuel’s existence which he had wanted for such a long time, he still felt only overwhelmed with a huge feeling of loss and sadness.
